WAUKON, Iowa (AP) — Plant and city officials have been working a way to remove what some residents say is a gross smell permeating the air in the northeast Iowa community of Waukon.

The odor is apparently coming from the Aveka Nutra Food Processing plant, which dries food-grade particles such as yeast at the plant.

According to Mayor Loren Beneke, the city has received 44 complaints about the odor so far this month.

"When you have a bad smell, we have some folks who say, 'Well, that doesn't bother me,' and we have some people who say it's terribly upsetting," Beneke said.

Officials will re-evaluate the problem once the plant installs a large filtration system. That work is expected to be finished by July.
