The newly elected mayor of Oelwein will be sworn in tonight.

Peggy Sherrets, who had been serving as mayor pro tem since the resignation of Jason Manus, had won a four-way race for mayor last Tuesday.

The special election was prompted by a petition by Oelwein residents. The term will run until the next city election, in November of 2015.

Manus resigned in August over sexual abuse allegations involving 2 young girls. Sherrets was appointed mayor, but some local citizens wanted an election brought before the public.

Sherrets will take the mayor's oath of office at tonight's regular Oelwein city council meeting, which begins at 6pm at Oelwein City Hall.

The council must also accept Sherrets' resignation as 1st Ward councilperson.

Later in the meeting, the council is slated to consider appointing someone to fill the 1st Ward seat, and to publish a notice of their intent.

Also on the agenda: the consideration of appointing a mayor pro-tem.
