A special election has determined the newest member of the Hazleton City Council.

Voters went to the polls yesterday (Tuesday), and approved Amy Ekstrand as council member.

Ekstrand defeated challenger Ronald Vawter by a vote total of 54 to 49.

The special election was called for by residents of Hazleton, to fill a vacancy created by the December resignation of councilman Josh Hershey.

The Hazleton council did appoint Ekstrand to the post in February, however residents petitioned for a special election.

Ekstrand will fill out the term, which runs until the end of this year.

According to the Buchanan County Auditor, the Board of Supervisors will canvass the election Monday. All absentee ballots have been returned, and the results will most likely remain the same.
