CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 41-year-old man who carried a rifle onto school grounds in Charles City has been given probation and has been barred from possessing firearms.

Joshua Johnson, of Charles City, was sentenced on Tuesday in Floyd County District Court. In addition to two years of probation, Johnson was given a year in jail suspended and credited with 30 days already served.

Police say an officer found Johnson outside the middle school, toting a rifle, around 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 31. Police say no activities were taking place at the school at the time.
