NE Iowan Charged for Trying to Hit Cop with Van

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Charles City man faces charges on accusations he tried hitting a police officer with his van.

26-year-old Lavonte Starr is charged with first-degree criminal mischief and assault on a police officer with a dangerous weapon. He also faces several misdemeanor charges, including operating while under the influence and disorderly conduct.

Charles City police responded to a report of an assault in progress at an apartment complex Saturday night. They say Starr, who was driving a van, sped toward an officer inside a vehicle in front of him.

Authorities say Starr then tried to drive his van into a chain-link fence.
