MARQUETTE, Iowa (AP) — The mayor and a council member have quit their posts in a northeast Iowa town, saying the City Council isn't doing its job.

Marquette Mayor David Schneider and council member Rinda Ferguson resigned Wednesday. Schneider says the council "did not follow through on their oath of office to protect city ordinances and state laws."

The council voted earlier this month not to pursue more legal action after a judge ordered the city to grant a zoning variance so a man could live in a mobile home on his property while building a house. The town had refused to issue a variance because the man's property isn't properly zoned for a mobile home.

Schneider says a bad precedent has been set for future zoning issues.

A member of the city's board of adjustment also quit Wednesday.

Marquette's City Attorney and City Manager also resigned their posts this month.
