With only one race for a council seat in Oelwein, only 18% of voters turned out yesterday in the city.

Darin Christensen defeated incumbent at-large councilman Paul Ryan, 319 to 268. The rest of the incumbents ran unopposed. Mayor Peggy Sherrets received 437 votes; 1st Ward Councilman Mat Weber got 147 votes; and 3rd Ward councilperson Lou Ann Milks received 103 votes.

In other races in Fayette County:
In Clermont, Dina Taylor and Troy Schott won a 3 way race for council.

In Elgin, a public measure for a tax to help pay for library needs was turned down, 82 no votes to 71 yes votes.

In Fayette, Mayor Andrew Wenthe was voted back in, beating challenger Daniel Boberg, 133 to 64. For council, all of the incumbents, plus Tiffany Kragnes, won election.

In Maynard, the incumbents, Jim Byerly and Scott Baker won a 3-way council race.

In Randalia, the incumbents, plus write-in Valerie Koch got council seats.

In St. Lucas, all of the incumbents except Terry Costigan were voted back in; he was defeated by Wilma Meyer.

In Waucoma, the incumbents plus write-in Sam Wenthold won council seats.

In Westgate, mayor Don Bushaw was defeated by Gene Rubendall, 35 to 21. Council winners were Bruce Mueller, Debra Cowell and Eric Wolff.

Taking a look at election results from races in other Northeast Iowa counties:
In Buchanan County:

In Aurora, 8 people were running for five council seats. The winners are Dale Buckman, Shelly Dawson, Jerry Meyers, Tammy Schweitzer and David Young.

In Fairbank, Ronald Miller and Ronald Woods won a 3 way race for council, while Gregory Mike Harter will fill a vacancy.

In Hazleton, Council members voted in are Amy Ekstrand and Christopher Hazlett.

In Independence, there were 3 council races, and the winners are Robert E. Hill, Denny Vaughn, and Dustin Dallenbach.

In Jesup, residents voted in Larry Thompson as the mayor, beating David Bishop, 361 to 167. Council seats went to Richard Mott, Russ Solomon and Dawn Vogel.

In Quasqueton, the three council winners are Terry Kress, William Kress and Shelia Payne.

And in Rowley, Sue Orr Webster was determined the winner for mayor; she beat Rita Knutson, 23 to 48.

In Allamakee County Races:

In Harpers Ferry, voters chose Richard Smrcina, Betty Palmer and Nancy Walleser for council.

In Lansing, Mike Brennan won the mayor's seat, defeating 3 write-in candidates. John Rethwisch and Don Peters, both write-in's, won council seats.

In New Albin, council winners were Alexie Grotegut, Kathy Goetzinger, and Ralph Nelson. To fill a couple of vacancies, George Blair and Joshua Dreps were winners.

And in Waukon, Duane DeWalle defeated Al Buege for the mayor's post, 265 to 186. Ben Rausch will fill a council vacancy.

In Clayton County races:
In Clayton, council winners were Timothy Brandel, Brad Johnson, Darryll Noble, JoAnn Creery and Dixie Connell.

For mayor of Elkader, Josh Pope defeated Robert Garms 175 to 104. Council winners were Peggy Lane and Kevin Lau.

In Garnavillo, there were 3 candidates for mayor; the winner was write-in Mark Priebe. James Downey and Lanny Kuehl got council seats.

In Luana, council winners were Lonnie Baade, Todd Olson and Jackie Radloff Schneider.

In Marquette, the mayor will be David Schneider, who defeated Larry Breuer, 71 to 19. Council seats went to Pamela Brodie-Fitzgerald and Eleanor Soulli.

8 candidates were vying for 5 North Buena Vista council seats; winners were David Breitbach, James Gordon, Diane Ludovissy, Lacey Ludovissy, and Donald Riniker.

St. Olaf had 5 council seats open; they went to Duane Bouska, Darwin Frana, Frank Kelly, Shannon Scherf, and Heidi Glawe.

And in Strawberry Point, Council seats were won by Hannah Evans, Megan Hansel, and Duane Johnson. The Public Measure for the Strawberry Point Library was approved, 209 "yes" votes to 39 "no" votes.
