CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A Parkersburg man convicted of assaulting a Cedar Falls police officer has been sentenced to six months in jail.

28-year-old Zachary Lee Church was sentenced Monday. He had been found guilty of assault on a peace officer, marijuana possession with intent to deliver and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Church was arrested on Christmas morning 2013 after officer Robert Anderson found him asleep inside of an idling car. Authorities say when Anderson instructed Church to sit in his patrol car, Church repeatedly punched the officer. Anderson then shot Church multiple times.

Anderson has since retired.
