Kinnick Stadium Flooded During Severe Storm [PHOTOS]
When the Iowa Hawkeyes play a night football game at Kinnick Stadium, the atmosphere is one of the most electric anywhere in the country. It's probably a good thing the Hawks weren't playing at home Tuesday evening (Aug. 28, 2018).
Severe thunderstorms that rolled through the Iowa City area, uprooted some trees and dumped heavy rain in a short amount of time. The downpour flooded Kinnick Stadium's turf field.
Although the water appeared to be completely gone about an hour later, the flooding has raised some concerns about whether Kinnick's playing surface will be safe to play on when the Hawkeyes host Northern Illinois in their season-opener at 2:40 PM on Saturday. In a statement, Iowa athletic officials said they plan to evaluate the field before the kick-off.
"The University of Iowa Athletics Department is aware of the water that covered the playing surface of Kinnick Stadium due to significant weather in the Iowa City area Tuesday evening. The field has now drained. Continued evaluation will occur Wednesday, and additional information will be provided when available."
