Many Iowans Unaware of Recent Changes to Fireworks Laws
Tents are popping up in parking lots all across Iowa. It's fireworks season. While the pyrotechnics have been legal in the state of Iowa since 2017, a change in state law has vendors excited for this year's holiday. That is, if Iowans knew about the change!
Iowa Fireworks Company Tent Manager Jessica McIntosh told KCRG that "70%, 80% of people that come in, we've had to tell them that it is legal." So, just what is the big change in Iowa law that many citizens don't seem to know about?
How Have Iowa's Fireworks Laws Changed?
KCRG reports that a new state law, which goes into effect on July 1st, will now allow people to set off fireworks on July 3rd, 4th, and on December 31st. The law states that cities and counties can no longer block people from shooting off fireworks from their properties on the 4th of July or the day before. While some may still regulate when you can set them off, Iowans can let the fireworks fly unrestricted, according to KCRG.
Are Iowans Taking Advantage of the New Law?
Apparently, not yet. Iowa Fireworks Company, which runs the tent along 1st Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids, told KCRG that sales haven't increased yet, despite the new Iowa law. But with the 4th of July right around the corner and inventory high, they are still hoping for a record sales year.

In case you were wondering just how big you can go with fireworks in Iowa, KCRG reports that a 7-inch shell is the largest you can purchase. That should 'let freedom ring.'
