Breakfast Is Back in Mt. Vernon After Five-Year Absence
For the first time in five years, breakfast is back on the menu in Mt Vernon! It's all thanks to a new restaurant that opened earlier this summer.
Full Service Breakfast is Back in Mt Vernon
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that First Street Breakfast Company opened in Mt Vernon on June 3rd. The new restaurant is at 100 1st Street SE in Mt Vernon, and features a full menu of diner classics including burgers, sandwiches, and salads. And of course, breakfast items like biscuits and gravy, omelets, and more!
Restaurant Owners are From Mt Vernon
The Gazette reports that the new restaurant is owned by Michelle and Cody Rollinger. After spending years in the restaurant industry in Cedar Rapids and Marion, the Mt Vernon residents have ventured into ownership for the first time. Michelle worked for Applebee's for 18 years, and at other restaurants like Shuey's, Vito's on 42nd, Riley's on 1st Ave, and Daisy's Garage, according to the Gazette.
Cody was the general manager of Chili's in Cedar Rapids and also ran dining operations at the University of Iowa, according to the Gazette. The two identified a need for a restaurant that served breakfast after The Skillet Cafe in Mt Vernon closed in 2021.
The goal is to keep breakfast simple. The Gazette reports that the menu includes country fried steak and eggs, and biscuits and gravy. You'll also find a breakfast quesadilla and a benedict over English muffins. As for the interior of the restaurant, Michelle told the Gazette that she wants customers to feel welcome, and that the inside is "bright and open, cheerful and clean."
