An Eastern Iowa Sheriff's Deputy was shot during what officials are calling a 'high-risk traffic stop' early Tuesday morning.

CBS2 reports that the incident happened just before 4:30 am Tuesday morning when Dubuque County Sheriff's deputies stopped a vehicle on Highway 151 north of the Highway 136 interchange with Cascade. In a press release, Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy stated that an unnamed adult male produced a gun, and shots were fired.

According to CBS2, the press release did not give specifics on what happened, only stating that both the suspect and the Dubuque County Sheriff's Deputy were shot. The deputy was taken to the MercyOne Emergency Department in Dubuque and then to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The deputy was listed in serious but stable condition.

According to the press release, the suspect died shortly after being taken from the scene, and CBS2 reports that the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the shooting. Sheriff Kennedy stated that there is no longer a danger to the public, and the officers involved are on critical incident leave.

Highway 151 was closed for more than 6 hours on Tuesday morning after the incident.
