Iowa Stargazers Won’t Want to Miss This Meteor Shower Thursday Night
I love stargazing. The only problem is that most of the time, the peak hours for seeing celestial events are when most people are sleeping. But not this week. You'll be able to view the peak of an annual meteor shower without waking up in the middle of the night!
When to View The Draconid Meteor Shower
USA Today reports that the Draconid Meteor Shower will peak between October 6th and 10th, producing a handful of meteors per hour. And the best part is, you don't have to stay up late to view them! The peak will occur during the evening hours of Thursday, October 8th. The meteor shower will begin just after dark, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time. USA Today reports that you should look to the northern sky near the constellation Draco.
Tips For Viewing The Meteor Shower
The Draconid Meteor Shower will be visible to the naked eye, but some might want to grab some binoculars or a telescope for a better view. Helping your view will be the fact that there will be very little moonlight in the sky. According to USA Today, it's best to get away from light pollution. Get out of town to a dark spot. Also, avoid looking at your phone. It can take up to 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the night sky.
If you want to photograph some of the Draconid Meteor shower, here are some tips!
How many meteor showers are over by bedtime? Not very many! Grab your camera and check out the Draconid Meteor Shower this week!
