Iowa Quarterback Deacon Hill Has Entered the Transfer Portal
I know Iowa football fans won't be shocked or saddened by today's news, but Hawkeye quarterback Deacon Hill has entered the transfer portal.
Deacon Hill transferred to Iowa from Wisconsin ahead of the 2023 season. He was expected to back up starter Cade McNamara who had transferred from Michigan. What happened was Hill was thrust into the starting role after McNamara suffered what turned out to be a season-ending injury. Hill struggled at QB for Iowa. Hawk Central reports that his stats on the year weren't great. Hill appeared in 13 games for Iowa, starting 9 games. He finished the year with 1.152 yards passing, 5 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and a passing percentage of just 48%.
I felt bad for Hill last season. He was simply not prepared to be the starter. But what backup really is? Plus, he had to play in the Brian Ferentz offense which didn't exactly scare any Big Ten defensive coordinators last season.
247sports reports that Iowa currently has two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in McNamara and Marco Lainez III. Four-star recruit James Resar will arrive this summer and Iowa also hopes to add one more signal caller via the transfer portal. Hill had reportedly taken a majority of the first team snaps with the Iowa offense during spring practices.
