Hawkeyes and Cyclones Set for Rare Night Game at Kinnick
The Iowa Hawkeye football program announced kickoff times and TV networks for its non-conference schedule this week. All eyes are on the matchup between the Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Yes, the Cy-Hawk game is going back under the lights!
Hawkeyes and Cyclones to Meet Under the Lights
Hawk Central reports that Iowa will host its first official night game against Iowa State in ten years with this year's week two matchup at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. The September 12th matchup between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and air on NBC. It also marks the fourth straight year the Cy-Hawk matchup has been picked up by network television.
The History of Iowa vs. Iowa State at Night
There have been four official night games in Iowa vs. Iowa State football history, according to Hawk Central. They include 1999, 2002, 2013, and 2016. Fans might also remember the 2019 game that included numerous weather delays and didn't end until just after 9 p.m.
Could We Get a Repeat of the 2016 Game?
Ten years ago was the last time Iowa hosted Iowa State at night. Hawk Central reports that there are some interesting similarities between that game and the 2026 matchup that could favor Iowa. In 2016, Iowa State was led by a new head coach, Matt Campbell. In 2026, ISU is led by a new head coach, Campbell's replacement, Jimmy Rigers. In 2016, Iowa was a double-digit favorite, and it is again prior to this year's game.
Hawk Central reports that the 2016 game was the only blowout in the nine meetings against the Campbell-led Cyclones, a 42-3 Iowa win. The Hawkeyes would love a repeat a decade later.
