Cedar Rapids Schools Cut $13 Million From Budget

KCRG reports that the Cedar Rapids School District was able to trim $13 million from its budget during a lengthy meeting on Monday night. The district has a much-publicized budget deficit caused by a number of factors, including shrinking enrollment. According to KCRG, the cuts include smaller raises for teachers, staff, and principals next year, and a reduction in software and consulting services.

17 Potential Cuts Were Discussed During the Meeting

The largest savings will come from eliminating consulting services, which will save over $2 million, according to KCRG. The district will also staff schools based on student enrollment, saving another $3 million. Another move the district is considering is moving City View High School, Iowa Big, and the Virtual Academy to one building, which would save $200,000, according to KCRG.

Which Schools Will Close Under The Plan?

KCRG reports that the school board was originally going to vote on closing up to seven schools on Monday, January 26th. That vote has now been pushed back to April. The district wants to gather more feedback on the issue before making a final decision. KCRG reports that, whatever the decision, no school closures will occur until 2027 at the earliest. Many of the schools in question are below capacity.
