UPDATE 3-5-26
Orchestra Iowa has met its fundraising goals, and the event known as Brucemorchestra will return, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette!
The fundraiser reached its goal of $50,000 by the end of February, but now wants to hit a final goal of $100,000. The Gazette reports that the outdoor event costs between $100,000 and $200,000 to produce, even if it is canceled by bad weather.
Among the donations was a $20,000 pledge from Grandon Charitable Foundation. The Gazette reports that money will make it possible for all children under the age of 18 to attend the event for free.
Brucemorchestra is scheduled for August 29th, 2026.
ORIGINAL STORY
One of the most popular outdoor concert events in Cedar Rapids could come back this summer after a 5-year hiatus. But it will take some help from the public to make it a reality.
The Return of Brucemorchestra
According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Brucemorchestra began back in 2008. The annual concert featuring Orchestra Iowa was held on the lawn of Brucemore and drew a crowd each year of around 5,000 spectators. Its 14th concert, held in 2021, would be the last time the popular outdoor event took place.
Why Did Brucemorchestra End?
There were several factors that caused the annual concert to end. The Gazette reports the 2022 concert was rained out not once, but twice! By 2023, rising costs and unpredictable weather caused Orchestra Iowa to cancel the event for good. The Gazette reports that the event was costly for Orchestra Iowa, costing the nonprofit between $100,000 and $200,000 each year, even if the event was cancelled due to the weather.
Brucemorchestra Could Return in 2026!
If you want to see the Brucemorchestra concert series resume in 2026, you can help make it happen! The Gazette reports that a new fundraiser has been launched, and if the goal of $50,000 is raised, Brucemorchestra will return to Cedar Rapids on August 29th! There are eight different levels at which you can donate to the concert HERE.
The Gazette reports that Orchestra Iowa is also working on plans to move future concerts indoors due to bad weather and how to minimize rising production costs.
