Charges have been filed against a man that authorities say was involved in a series of wrong-way crashes on I-380 in Cedar Rapids back in January. After the accidents, the man fled the scene on foot, naked.

Thursday morning, January 6, 2022, at approximately 9:30 a.m. a number of crashes occurred in the southbound lanes of I-380. They were caused by a wrong-way driver on the interstate that collided with multiple vehicles and caused a semi to overturn, spilling a load of grain. After the crashes, the wrong-way driver removed his clothing and walked away from the scene. The high temperature in Cedar Rapids that day was 0.

In late February, we reported that the victims of the incident were upset that no charges had been filed. That changed a couple of weeks ago.

According to Assistant Linn County Attorney Molly Edwards, charges were filed on March 30 against 33-year-old Andrew R. Cairy of Cedar Rapids. He's charged with:

  • Serious Injury By a Vehicle (Class D felony)
  • Leaving the Scene of a Serious Incident (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
  • Leaving the Scene of a Bodily Injury Accident--2 counts (Serious Misdemeanor)

Cairy was arrested early this month and made his initial court appearance on Sunday, April 3. He was released from the Linn Country Correction Center on a $10,000 bond. Edwards says Cairy is on supervised release by the Department of Correctional Services, as he awaits trial.
