This home for sale in eastern Iowa is the perfect combination of elegance and beauty, inside and out.

I ran across the post for this gorgeous house and was just blown away. Then I took a look at the inside photos (below). There are simply not enough superlatives for this mansion.

The home is known as the William Harrison Day House. Located in Dubuque, Day was the city's first lumber baron and built the home which was completed in 1890.

Day operated the Standard Lumber Company in Dubuque, which was incorporated in 1882. In 1897 alone, the company cut 40 million feet of lumber, the equivalent of more than 7500 miles. Some of the pine came from as far away as the U.S.-Canadian border. Standard Lumber Company owned five steamboats to transport all of their lumber and employed 300 men.

Encyclopedia Dubuque reports that Day is believed to be the man that started making cuts of wood smaller than advertised. For instance, a 2x4 that was, in reality, 3 5/8 inches wide.

After fires at the Standard Lumber Company plant in 1906, and a disastrous one in 1911 that burned as much as seven blocks of finished lumber, a distraught Day and his wife moved to New York City. A member of the Union Army in the Civil War, Day was part of General William Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864. Day's 1921 obituary states his body was taken to Dubuque for burial.

Now you know the history of the man who had the house built. Now, for the house itself. The mansion, at 1203 Grove Terrace in Dubuque, has cherry, walnut, maple, and pine throughout. Completely rehabbed in the early 1990s, it is truly a grand palace. The home is 6,308 square feet with 5 bedrooms, 3 full baths (and one 1/2 bath), and an absolutely stunning view. See it all, including the views, in the photos below. The asking price for the home is $799,000. Exit Realty Dubuque is the listing agent.
