Galena Boasts a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in Patient Satisfaction
There’s something special happening at Midwest Medical Center, and the rest of the country is taking notice. The Galena-based hospital was recently named one of the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) in the nation for Best Practice in Patient Satisfaction, a huge honor that puts the hospital in some elite company.
The recognition comes from the Chartis Center for Rural Health and was announced by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). What makes this award even more meaningful is that it’s not just about numbers; it’s about the people who've been served. The ranking is based on how patients feel about the care they receive. It's measured across all 10 domains of the HCAHPS survey. From communication with doctors and nurses to discharge planning and cleanliness, Midwest Medical Center is doing exactly what it needs to for its patients.
“Hard work, dedication and perseverance have made us who we are today and are why we continue to grow. We are so proud of every member of our team for their commitment, collaboration, and willingness to serve the needs of our patients. Our recognition as a top 20 Best Practice in Patience Satisfaction Critical Access Hospital in the nation means our community further identifies ‘the Midwest Difference’ and assures our patients they can count on us to continue to deliver the expert services they need now and in the future.”
-Tracy Bauer, President and CEO of Midwest Medical Center.
The top 20 list was drawn from the Chartis Center’s broader ranking of the Top 100 CAHs across the nation, looking at everything from market share and outcomes to quality and financial performance. However, to stand out specifically for patient satisfaction shows a deep level of care that local patients can experience every day in Galena.

Midwest Medical Center serves the tri-state area, providing care not only to Galena but also to surrounding communities in northwestern Illinois, southwestern Wisconsin, and eastern Iowa. Their services range from hospital and emergency care to fitness, rehab, and senior living.
An official awards ceremony takes place in September during the NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in Kansas City. Until then, Galena has every reason to be proud. For residents, it’s comforting to know that world-class care is available right in their backyard, and that they provide the attention to detail only a local hospital can.
