Government Issues Massive Ice Cream Cake Recall Across America
Americans are no strangers to a food recall.
Whether its something like Trader Joe's crackers (recently recalled due to possibly containing metal) or a listeria outbreak in deli meat, the recalls are there to ensure the safety of those who may have otherwise consumed the products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now recalled tons of ice cream cakes that were found to contain a bacterium that causes food poisoning.
The company that makes the ice cream cake for Friendly's, Maryland-based Totally Cool Inc., is voluntarily recalling its Friendly's Celebration Ice Cream Cake due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, which was confirmed after testing.
It's not just any recall, either — this ice cream cake call-back has been given a high-risk classification by the FDA.
The item has been updated to a Class I recall as of August 1 — the highest risk level, which is issued when there is a "reasonable probability" that the use of or exposure to a product could "cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
When asked for comment, Totally Cool Inc. released this statement:
"The company continues its investigation and is taking preventive actions, no other products produced by Totally Cool, Inc. are impacted by this recall."
Check those labels and make sure you don't have one stashed in your freezer. The recall includes all 'best by' dates inclusive of and between May 20 and May 28, 2024. The product has a UPC code of 29839000920 and one of the following plant codes: 24-65, 24-0065, 2465, or 240065.
