Week two of the high school football season gets an early start in eastern Iowa.

Cedar Rapids Washington hosts Marion at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids Thursday night. The Warriors (1-0) opened their season with a 79-0 blowout of intra-city rival Cedar Rapids Jefferson last week, while Marion (0-1) is looking to rebound from a 36-35 setback to Clear Creak-Amana.

There are several marquee match-ups Friday night that are indicators of which teams may be competing in the playoffs in November.

One of the top games is for the bragging rights of Grundy County. Grundy Center (1-0), the top-rated team in Class A, plays at Dike-New Hartford (1-0), which ranked No. 8 in Class 2A. Grundy Center opened with a 35-7 victory over South Hardin at home last week, while the Wolverines went to McLaughlin Field in Waterloo and stunned Columbus Catholic 35-21. The Sailors were ranked No. 5 in the preseason Class 1A poll.

Another of the other No.1-ranked teams is also involved in a top-10 showdown. Class 3A's West Delaware (1-0) gets a good early season test from Cedar Rapids Xavier (1-0), which is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A. The top-ranked Hawks opened with a decisive 41-7 over Dubuque Wahlert last week, while the Saints beat Western Dubuque 28-14.

In the northeast corner of Iowa, Waukon travels to Decorah for another game of rated opponents. The Indians (1-0) are ranked No. 5 in Class 2A and the Vikings (1-0) are No. 3 in Class 4A.

The fourth game featuring a head-to-head match-up of rated teams is a Class 5A battle at Dalzell Field in Dubuque. No. 9 Senior (1-0) hosts No. 7 Cedar Rapids Prairie (1-0).

In addition to the games involving rated teams, the race to secure one of those coveted playoff spots begins for many eight-player teams and those who compete in Class A. Under the new eight-game regular season schedule, the majority of the squads in Iowa's two smallest classes play their district openers this week.

LOOK: Here are the pets banned in each state

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
