WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The former Sumner police chief who retired after being shot three times while trying to catch two bank robbery suspects is being honored for his efforts.

Dennis Cain was shot in the neck, chest and hand in 2012 while trying arrest Jeremiah Mumford and William Clayton in the robbery of Maynard Savings Bank.

Cain says he's honored to receive the Purple Heart award from the American Police Hall of Fame. The award is bestowed to officers who have died or left mostly disabled after injuries sustained on duty.

Mumford and Clayton were both sentenced to prison in the robbery.
