Four candidates have been announced as finalists to be Waterloo's next police chief.

Two public forums are scheduled this week to give residents a chance to meet them. The informal gatherings will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, 225 Commercial Street.

The finalists include Major Joe Leibold and Lieutenant Corbin Payne, both of whom are current Waterloo police officers. Also being considered for the job are Captain Wayne Hudson of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department in Nebraska and former Fort Worth, Texas, police chief Joel Fitzgerald.

Payne is scheduled to be introduced at Tuesday's forum at 5:30 PM, followed by Fitzgerald at 6:30 PM. Leibold will meet the public Wednesday at 5:30 PM, followed by Hudson at 6:30 PM.

The four finalists are hoping to replace former Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka, who retired at the end of 2019. Trelka had held the position since May of 2010.
