DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — An endangered bird's weeklong stay in Dubuque has ended with its return to the wild in Wisconsin.

A juvenile whooping crane who local residents called Kevin was captured Tuesday in a field on Dubuque's West End.

Experts estimate there are only 600 whooping cranes remaining worldwide.

Anne Lacy with the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin, says the bird was first spotted about a week ago. She says the bird was captured and removed because the area "had too much human influence."

The bird was born earlier this year at a wildlife research center in Maryland and later flown to Wisconsin for release. It was rereleased Tuesday near Spring Green, Wisconsin.
