CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified the man and woman found dead in a Cedar Rapids home in what they believe was a murder-suicide.

Cedar Rapids officials say 45-year-old Mitchell Wade Haferbecker and 44-year-old Sherry Haferbecker were found with apparent gunshot wounds Tuesday when police conducted a welfare check.

Investigators say they suspect Mitchell Haferbecker shot Sherry Haferbecker inside the residence, and that he then used the gun to kill himself.

According to a news release, the Cedar Rapids Police Department received two hang up emergency calls, followed by a call from an official with the school district where Sherry Haferbecker worked. The official said she hadn't shown up for her shift, and that her husband, also a district employee, had been placed on administrative leave, prompting officers to perform the welfare check.
