Louisiana Dogs Headed North to Eastern Iowa

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Some dogs housed in crowded south Louisiana shelters are heading for Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Staffers from the Lafourche  Parish Animal Shelter staff brought five dogs to Hammond over the weekend. There, they boarded a van bound for the Cedar Valley Humane Society in Cedar Rapids.

A program run by the Humane Society of Louisiana sends dogs to shelters that have waiting lists for adoptable dogs — or that can move animals out in a matter of days.

Hilary Knight, manager of the Lafourche shelter, says that for various reasons, shelters up north generally have more space than shelters in the South.
