CLAYTON, Iowa (AP) — A 60-year-old Dysart man has died after being pulled from the Mississippi River near Clayton after he fell from a boat.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Charles Petersen was a passenger on a boat operated by his wife when he fell into the river from the rear of the boat Monday evening.

Authorities say Petersen was not wearing a life jacket, and that two other passengers in the boat threw him a life jacket before jumping into the water themselves to help him.

The department says they were not able to get Petersen back on board. A rescue boat from the Garnavillo Fire Department pulled him from the water. Peterson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the death continues.
