Oelwein area residents have been given permission to start burning those dead leaves that are cluttering your yard.

Oelwein Fire Chief Mike Hillman has set the dates for fall open burning in the city. It began on Sunday, October 21st, and will be in effect through November 11th.

Items that may be burned on residents' property includes only leaves and branches.
If burning is not possible, the Oelwein Yard Waste Disposal Site is open. It's located at the intersection of 4th Street SW and 7th Avenue SW. The site is open 7 days a week.

Only natural yard waste is allowed to be dropped off, which includes leaves, grass trimmings, brush, garden waste, and tree branches.

Disposing of other items is not allowed; violators would face fines and a loss of dumping privileges.

The Oelwein Fire Chief reminds residents to use caution when burning leaves, and keep a source of water close by when doing so.
