Week three of the 2017 Iowa high school football season features the start of district play for many teams across the state. There's a full slate of games involving teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa that are scheduled to be played Friday night (Sept. 8).

Among the area games is a top-10 showdown in Class-4A. No. 8 Cedar Falls hosts No. 3 Iowa City West in a marquee, non-district match-up at the UNI-Dome. Both teams are loaded with talent and are coming off blow out victories last week.

At Ed Thomas Field in Parkersburg, the Falcons of Aplington-Parkersburg (3-0) face West Marshall (2-1) in a game that could go along way in determining the Class-2A District 3 championship. Third-ranked A-P has outscored its three opponents by a combined score of 122-23, while West Marshall -- one of the state's traditional powerhouses -- looks much-improved and appears ready to end a three-year playoff drought.

Another similar battle takes place in West Union, where perennial playoff contender North Fayette Valley (0-2) looks to rebound from a disappointing start to its season. The TigerHawks host No. 8 Cascade (2-0) in the Class-2A District 4 opener for both teams.

Injuries will keep one area team off the field this week. Administrators at Starmont have decided to forfeit the Stars' Class-A District 4 opener at fifth-ranked Lisbon due to safety concerns. In a Facebook post earlier this week, school officials confirmed they decided to cancel Friday night's game due to a lack of available varsity players.

By rule, Lisbon will be credited with a 1-0 victory over the Stars. The Lions will also be awarded the maximum 17 points in the playoff tie-breaker system.

One other game involving area teams features Oelwein (0-2) taking on the Sailors Waterloo Columbus Catholic (0-2). The Huskies face their first test of the season when they kick-off Class-2A District play at T.J. McLaughlin Field. Pre-game coverage begins around 7:20 p.m. on AM-950, KOEL.
