Nearly a dozen teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa are featured in the first high school football rankings of the season this week by the Associated Press.

In all, 11 area squads are ranked. Six others received votes, just missing a spot among the top 10 in the six-class poll.

Perennial eight-player state powerhouse Don Bosco debuted at No. 1, after opening the season with a 44-0 shutout of Gladbrook-Reinbeck on the road. Ranked behind the Dons is Turkey Valley at No. 5.

Waukon joins Don Bosco as a No. 1 ranked team. The Indians are considered to be the best team in Class 2A, a poll that also features Crestwood at No. 10.

Half of the teams ranked in the Class A poll are from northeast Iowa. The survey features Edgewood-Colesburg at No. 3, Wapsie Valley at No. 4, North Tama at No. 7, Grundy Center at No. 9, and defending state champion Hudson at No. 10.

The other area rated teams are Dike-New Hartford in Class 2A) and Cedar Falls (No. 3 in Class 4A).
