WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A city councilman has asked his colleagues for another vote Monday on a $750,000 grant application to help pay for a $2.6 million whitewater park and kayak course near downtown Waterloo.

Councilman Jerome Amos Jr. missed last week's council meeting for medical reasons. The vote was 3-1 in favor of the grant application to the National Park Service, but the resolution required four votes to pass. Amos asked for the reconsideration.

The grant application would be prepared by the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments. Tuesday is the application deadline. The federal grant requires a $750,000 local match.

Project plans call for an 80-foot-wide strip of whitewater along the east side of the river.
