Two Correctional Officers in Coralville Assaulted by Inmate

A fight on Saturday, January 15  at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) led to two correctional officers suffering injuries. The IMCC is a medium-security correctional facility located at 2700 Coral Ridge Avenue in Coralville.

The officers did not suffer serious injuries

With the recent deadly attack on two employees at the Anamosa State Penitentiary still on the minds of many Iowans, this story may rattle some bad memories, but the end result was far less severe. KWWL reports this attack led to only minor injuries. The report indicates an inmate approached an officer stationed in a living unit and, for no given reason, began to assault him. A second officer attempted to assist the first officer, at which time the inmate assaulted him.

Additional staff came to the aid of the officers, and there were no further injuries. the first officer was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he was examined and released. The second officer was checked out at the IMCC. He was able to complete his shift and went home without further need for medical attention.

The Iowa Medical and Classification Center can house up to 900 inmates and has been in service since 1969. The facility found itself in the news in the summer of 2020 when it was discovered COVID-19 protocols were not being followed correctly. James McKinney, who'd been the warden at the facility since 2015, and in corrections for a total of 27 years, abruptly retired during the investigation.
