An Eastern Iowa man faces robbery and kidnapping charges for an incident in Oelwein, for allegedly arranging to meet a person through a social media site, then robbing them at gunpoint.


The incident happened on February 23rd in Oelwein; 18 year old Mason Mally of Cedar Rapids, is accused of arranging a sale on the social media site, Snapchat.

After the buyer entered Mally's car, Mally drove a short distance, then pulled a gun on the victim, demanding the person's money. As the victim tried to get out of the car, Mally lowered the car's reclining seat, trapping the victim inside.

Mally got away with $1,500 in cash.

Following an investigation, a Fayette County Sheriff's Office warrant was issued for the arrest of Mally. He was taken into custody by Linn County Sheriff's deputies last Friday (March 9), and transferred to Fayette County.

Mally is being charged with First Degree Robbery, 2nd Degree Kidnapping, and Going Armed with Intent.
He is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond in the Fayette County jail.
