CF Residents May Foot the Bill for Street Lights
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Falls officials say they're considering billing residents and businesses for the cost of lighting the city's streets.
According to a city memo, Cedar Falls Utilities has been working with a Michigan-based consultant to determine how the charges would pan out for utility customers, including nonprofit agencies and the University of Northern Iowa. Street lighting has traditionally been paid for by the city.
Officials denied requests for further comment on the proposal, which was slated for approval by the City Council on March 2, but has since been delayed pending legal considerations.
Initial reports say $346,200 would be charged to customers in fiscal year 2016, of which $259,560 would come from residential customers.
Officials say the proposal is likely to change.
