Body Found in Burning Car is Identified

Authorities have released the name of the person found dead in a burning vehicle near Riverside, in Johnson County.

The incident happened just before 1pm Friday on 540th Street; the Kalona Fire Department and Johnson County Sheriff responded to the report of a vehicle on fire.

As the blaze was being extinguished, fire fighters found a body inside the vehicle. That person has now been identified as 85 year old Gerald Maye.

An autopsy has been performed at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. The cause of death is unknown, but it is not considered suspicious.

The incident remains under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Medical Examiner with assistance from the State Fire Marshall.
