Black Hawks Salute The Iowa Stars This Weekend-More Seats On Sale

After seven consecutive home games, Waterloo goes on the road Friday night to visit the Dubuque Fighting Saints. After playing hard in some close games, the Black Hawks look to turn things around and get back in the win column. The team has a big weekend in store, as they welcome the Tri-City Storm to Party Town Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The Black Hawks also plan to honor Iowa's first farm team that played more than fifty years ago, by wearing special green and white replica jerseys. Plus, a change in capacity has opened up more seats for this weekend's games at Young Arena.

IN PARTY TOWN VS. TRI-CITY
Let's start with this weekend's home games versus Tri-City featuring a Saturday night match-up at 6:05 and a Valentine's Day matinee game with a 3:05 puck drop. Last Friday, Iowa's governor lifted many coronavirus restrictions, including the use of masks, social distancing and limitations on social gatherings. However, many Cedar Valley businesses are continuing mask requirements including the Black Hawks and Young Arena. The team would like to emphasize that face coverings will still be required under the parameters of the City of Waterloo’s continuing mask mandate.

“We have a responsibility to think about the safety of our fans, players, and staff first and foremost,” “We welcome the progress which the State of Iowa has identified in recent pandemic trends and the corresponding changes to health guidelines. That said, we know there is a long way to go, and like other sports teams in the state, we will proceed with a prudent degree of caution as the situation continues to develop” said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene.

Doors will open one hour before puck drop. With extreme cold temperatures anticipated, the team reminds fans that there will be no access to the building before 5:05 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. respectively and ask spectators to plan appropriately to avoid exposure to dangerous winter temperatures. Black Hawks Will Salute The Iowa Stars By Wearing Replica Jerseys
According to a team press release: More than 50 years ago, Waterloo’s McElroy Auditorium was home to the state’s first NHL farm club: the Iowa Stars of the Central Hockey League. In 1969/70, the Iowa Stars ended the year with a 35-26-11 record, finishing 2nd in the CHL regular season standings. The team was also runners-up during the playoffs, advancing to the championship round before eventually falling to Omaha. Remarkably, in total, 20 members of that team ended up playing in the NHL.

In an effort to salute their hockey predecessors, and raise money for a great cause, the Black Hawks will wear Iowa Stars replica jerseys during this weekend's games to benefit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. The jerseys are primarily green replicas, (as seen in the photo above) and feature yellow piping on sleeves, waist, and collar, along with player names and numbers on the back. The sweaters also feature a Black Hawks logo on each shoulder and the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity emblem on the back. The team will auction the replica jerseys in an online, regressive format to benefit Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity beginning on February 13th. The regressive auction will open with a “buy it now” bid price on each sweater. The bid amount for any given jersey will be periodically reduced until it is sold or until the auction ends on March 1st.
