Black Hawks Beat RoughRiders on Teddy Bear Toss Night [PHOTOS]

The Waterloo Black Hawks’ annual Thanksgiving game at Young Arena ended with the lowest score ever recorded on the holiday: a 1-0 win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The Waterloo Broadcasting/K-98.5 Teddy Bear Toss Night is long standing tradition that we are proud to be apart of. Stuffed animals are thrown onto the ice after the Black Hawks score their first goal. These toys are gathered and distributed to area children charities.

In 44 prior Thanksgiving contests, Waterloo has never won or lost by a 1-0 count. Twice previously the Hawks and RoughRiders had gone to overtime tied at 1-1 – most recently in 2007 – with the visitors eventually claiming both of those affairs in shootouts.

Thursday, Robbie Beydoun made 14 saves for his fourth shutout of the season. The Hawks limited Cedar Rapids to no more than five shots in any period.
Waterloo had a 17-4 edge in shots going to the first intermission and extended the count to 30-9 through 40 minutes. Yet the Hawks could not put a puck past Drew DeRidder.

That changed 3:13 into the third period, when Logan Jenuwine gained possession at center and set up Emil Ohrvall at the top of the left wing circle. Ohrvall lifted a wrist shot inside the opposite top corner to break the deadlock. As a result, DeRidder suffered the loss, despite 33 saves.

The Hawks next action is a return game against Cedar Rapids on the road Saturday, opening up a window in which eight of Waterloo’s next ten games will be away from Young Arena.
