The Cedar Rapids Gazette is reporting that the Iowa High School Athletic Association has confirmed that five Iowa high school baseball teams have suspended their seasons due to positive cases of COVID-19 in their programs.

According to the IHSAA, Dubuque Wahlert notified officials that it had a positive coronavirus case over the weekend, and would be shutting down its season for two weeks. Other schools that have put 14-day quarantines in place include Applington-Parkersburg, Iowa Falls-Alden, Le Mars Gehlen, and Woodbine. The Gazette reports that there may be other districts with positive cases that are working with health officials that haven't suspended their seasons as of yet.

Officials say that as of now, all the schools are planning on the two-week suspension. None have said that they will end their baseball season yet. According to the IHSAA, only three Iowa baseball programs decided not to field teams during the shortened 2020 summer season. Officials praised the Iowa Department of Public Health and other agencies for answering questions and making health decisions that coaches and administrators aren't in the position to make.

The baseball season is just three weeks old, including one week of competition. Officials believe that so far, things have gone OK. They say they feel bad for the teams that have had to suspend play, but given the number of programs playing, and the number of games and practices held, officials are pleased where things are at.

What happens when more teams have participants test positive? We'll have to wait and see how they feel then. Chances are that more teams will be affected soon.
