Area Man Convicted of Beating Family Dog

A Northeast Iowa man has been found guilty of beating his family's dog, and recording the act to play back to his children.

42 year old Jason Johnson of Independence was convicted Thursday (Aug. 8) in Buchanan County District Court, of the charge of Animal Torture.

The incident happened May 17th of this year; Johnson had allegedly held down the dog and beat her with his belt, as well as his closed fist, claiming the dog had chewed up a pair of his sunglasses that Johnson had left out.

Johnson ordered his son to record part of the beating, and send the video to his other children, showing them what happens when they don't secure the dog in it's kennel.

A few days after the incident with the dog, Johnson is accused of assaulting his son, after learning the boy had released the dog beating video to police. He was then charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury.

The Independence Police Department took custody of the dog, and arrested Johnson.

The charge of animal torture could put Johnson in prison for up to 2 years, and a fine as high as $6,250.

Johnson will also have to undergo a psychological exam.

After being found guilty of the torture charge, Johnson made a comment to his son while still in court. He was then given the additional charge of Violation of a No-contact Order.

A sentencing hearing for Johnson will take place at a later date.
