The "wave of the future" (according to some) will soon be here.

In a media release sent to us at the station by Alliant Energy, the company says Cedar Rapids will be the home to its first solar garden in Iowa. According to Terry Kouba, president of Alliant Energy Iowa:

We are excited for our Iowa customers to enjoy the benefits of clean, renewable energy, We anticipate all blocks will be sold quickly given the level of interest we’ve gathered from our Iowa customers. The Community Solar program is just one more way we can use our knowledge and resources to serve our customers while bringing them options and solutions to meet their needs.

The Cedar Rapids solar garden is part of the company's Alliant Energy ® Community Solar program. It allows Alliant electric customers to receive the benefits of solar power without having to install solar panels on their property.

Subscribers will receive credits on their monthly bill for every block of energy purchased. There will be 18,000 total solar blocks, with each 250-watt block producing an estimated average of 541 kilowatts annually. Credit will begin once the garden is operational and continue for the 20-year life of the project.

Alliant Energy began construction this summer at a location north of the 1100 block of 33rd Avenue SW. The project has an estimated completion date of late summer 2023. To get more information and purchase solar blocks, at $395 each either for a residence or business, click HERE. Habitat for Humanity and Transamerica have already accounted for 66 percent of the project's solar block reservations.
