Alleged NE Iowa Can Thief Caught

A Fort Atkinson man has been arrested for allegedly stealing empty beverage cans from a donation box.

The investigation began in October, when the Fayette County sheriff was alerted of someone removing cans from a fund-raising donation box in St. Lucas. The cans were donated by community members and the general public, to be redeemed for deposit money, to be used for community events in St. Lucas.

At about 3:45am Monday, a deputy observed 53 year old Nazario Garcia Uribe of Fort Atkinson, remove a bag that contained about 100 cans, from the donation box. Uribe was then arrested and charged with theft fifth degree.

He was taken to the Fayette County jail, to be held until his appearance before a magistrate.
