3 Killed in Chickasaw County Wreck

A traffic accident in Chickasaw County has killed 3 people.

It happened shortly after 6pm Tuesday on Highway 63 at the intersection with 240th street, just south of New Hampton. A westbound car driven by 22 year old Bertha Smith of Waterloo failed to yield at the intersection, and was broadsided by a northbound semi driven by 43 year old Kevin Powers of Ainsworth.

One of the passengers in the car was ejected. Three passengers were killed. They were identified as 24 year old Latorris Duffie, 29 year old Keith Demry, and 25 year old Devin Gordin. According to the Iowa State Patrol, none of the deceased were wearing seat belts.

Smith and another passenger, 25 year old Shaun Anderson, were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Powers, the semi driver, was not hurt.

The Chickasaw County Sheriff and Chickasaw County Fire Rescue Ambulance and New Hampton Ambulance assisted at the scene.
