11/30/1954: The First Documented Person to be Struck By A METEORITE (Photos)
On November 30, 1954, 34-year-old Ann Hodges was taking a nap on her couch in her home in Alabama. Her nap was soon interrupted by an 8.5 pound meteorite slamming into her home. It punched a hole through the roof of the house, bounced off a radio, and crashed into her hip, leaving a fierce bruise from the 4.5 million year old space rock. Before hitting her home and breaking apart, the fireball was seen streaking across the sky from three different states.
The Hodges donated the meteorite to the Alabama Museum of Natural History in 1956.
This is just one of a few of confirmed cases of a human being hit by a meteorite. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Germany was hit by a pea-sized meteorite.
