Electricity has been fully restored to a portion of Waterloo following a power outage on the southern edge of the city Tuesday morning (May 1, 2018).

Geoff Greenwood, a spokesman for Mid-American Energy, said just over 1,000 customers were left in the dark when a utility poll caught fire as scattered thunderstorms moved across the Cedar Valley.

The outage occurred around 8:30 AM. Greenwood said power was completely restored to all of the 1,057 effected customers by 12:45 PM.

According to Greenwood, utility crews had restored electricity to about 500 homes and business by 9:45 AM. The company's website showed nearly 100 homes and businesses in the city were still without power at 11:30 AM.

Greenwood said the outage effected an area of southern Waterloo and rural Black Hawk County bordered by the 4500 block of Hammond Ave. to the north, the 7700 block of Dysart Road to the south, the 6000 block of La Porte Road to the east, and the 500 block of E. Orange Road to the west.
