Imagine waking up on Sunday thinking it would be a typical day and then something happens that you could have never expected.

Well for two families, this is what happened on Sunday, except the outcomes were very different.

Luke Helton, a 45-year-old man from Leon was traveling southbound on 253rd avenue on Sunday afternoon when he became unconscious. According to the crash report by Iowa State Patrol, Helton became unconscious due to an unknown medical condition.

Because he was unconscious, Helton ran his pickup off the road, through a fence, and into a nearby farm pond.

The property owner discovered Helton.

Officials were called and Helton was declared dead at the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating what caused Helton’s death.

One Dead, Two Hospitalized After Car Runs Off Road

Unfortunately, this was not the only fatal accident that occurred on Sunday.

Reyes Lopez, a 25-year-old man from Rock Valley was traveling west on B40 when he drove off the road and into a ditch. The vehicle then “vaulted a culvert and struck an embarkment” says the Iowa State Patrol crash report.

Reyes was driving the car at the time of the accident and was accompanied by 32-year-old Maro Lopez and a 3-year-old female minor.

Marco and the female minor were taken to Sioux Center hospital and then later flown to Sioux Falls Area Hospital. Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in this accident.
