A Waterloo manufacturer will be laying off employees whilst facing a major low in consumer demand. Omega Cabinetry, located at 1205 Peters Drive, is getting rid of approximately a fifth of their staff members, according to a report.

The Cedar Valley employer had approximately 550 workers when the announcement was made public. Officials say that "under 100" of these people will be out of the job.

MasterBrand, the largest cabinet manufacturer in North America which just so happens to be the company that owns Omega, has been laying off employees in various plants all across the country over the past few years. In April of 2021, the company laid off nearly 300 employees in one of their Alabama locations.

According to a local news report, company officials decided to completely close a plant in Virginia which had approximately 250 employees.

The Omega Cabinetry located in Waterloo joins the list of locations that have faced lay offs. The reason for this cutback is sounding similar to the previous cases, i.e. concerns over  "market conditions" and "customer preferences."

As reported by the Waterloo Courier, a MasterBrand official said, “we are not seeing the demand we had been seeing.”

Company higher ups are encouraging those that have been given the boot to apply for jobs at some of their other locations. Some reports claim that there is a possibility of MasterBrand covering some relocation fees.
