Iowa Senate Votes to Ban Handheld Phone Use

On Tuesday, March 18th the Iowa Senate voted 47-1 to pass a bill that would make the use of a cellphone while driving illegal, according to reports.

Senate File 22 would ban the use of cell phones or other electronic devices while driving in Iowa, unless the device is in hands free mode.

Understanding Iowa’s Current Texting and Driving Laws

Under the current laws that are in place, it is illegal to write/ send a text message while driving in Iowa. Officials have been trying for several years to implement a full out ban on the handheld use of these devices while driving.

Governor Kim Reynolds Pushes for Hands-Free Law

There have been attempts made in the past to pass this type of law. In every single instance so far, the legislation would struggle once it reached the House.

This time it seems like there's a decent chance that the law might see the light of day.

During Governor Kim Reynolds' Condition of the State this year, she urged lawmakers to bring a bill to her desk banning the usage of cellphones while driving.

Exceptions to Iowa’s Proposed Hands-Free Driving Law

The Des Moines Register laid out all of the major exceptions to this cellphone ban in a recent article.

The law would not apply to:

• Public safety officials
• Utility and public transit workers
• Emergency health care responders
• Individuals operating specialized agricultural equipment
