Pain at the Pump: Gas Prices Skyrocketing in Iowa (Again)

Remember when gas prices were dropping in historic fashion? I mean, they were still high, but they were at least dropping. Well, those days are done. The days of record-dropping prices were short-lived and sadly, didn't offer that much relief to consumers.

As we speak, the average price of a gallon of gas in the Hawkeye State is now $3.71, according to Gas Buddy. That is a very noticeable increase of 14 cents in one week's time.

The reason for this price jump? NBC News reports a cut in oil production by OPEC is to blame. While $3.71 is not a fun price to pay, the national average is $3.92, meaning Iowans are still paying roughly 21 cents less per gallon.

The bad news is the trend doesn't appear to be slowing, and our pain may not be over just yet. KWWL reports the national average is up 22.5 cents from just one month ago.

While it may offer little relief, Iowa's average prices are lower on average than Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois - where it's over a painful $4/gallon on average. While Missouri's average is slightly less, Nebraska and South Dakota's price per gallon is roughly the same as Iowas.

In October of 2021, our price was an average of $3.04 a gallon in Iowa.

So is $3.71 the highest state average for October in recent Iowa history? No, actually it's not... but it's very close. Back in 2012, has was $3.75/gallon. Of course, we could easily get there, or higher, yet this month. Stay tuned!
