My wife and I share a car and trade off driving.   Last night after leaving the station she wasn't feeling it so she pulled over and we traded spots.  We were standing outside the car when she noticed where we were.  It was one of her favorite restaurants, The Dragon! The smile on her face was quickly followed by a frown because it wasn't there anymore.  It hasn't been there for quite some time. She talked about going there with her family and how the food was so good. I remember the restaurant because they had a neat sign. It hadn't been closed all that long when I moved here previously in late 2005.

The Gazette reports the Wong Family closed the Dragon in 2001 when Mr Wong decided to retire.  No other family member took over so, it was closed.  For some time The Dragon Chinese restaurant was the only Chinese restaurant in Cedar Rapids. It is sad when a restaurant that has the most amazing food closes and the recipes go with it into the abyss.  I don't always think things happen for a reason but here I wonder.  My wife and I stop outside the old Dragon Restaurant, and then this post on Facebook!

Tim W sparked a Dragon Renaissance because in the comments it was on.  The love felt for a restaurant that has been closed for over 2 decades was quite awesome.  Reading what people said you felt the Wongs closed the doors of The Dragon only yesterday.  The memories of The Dragon were very fresh and it seemed as if they were to re-open today, it'd be packed.

You can see what people had to say about the Dragon restaurant below and if you'd like to become a part of the Cedar Rapids Facebook group, it's here You Know You Grew Up In Cedar Rapids, IA in the 70's & 80's Because....

Photos of The Iowa Hawkeyes Vs. Troy Trojans September 14, 2024

The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Troy Trojans, 38 to 21, on September 14, 2024. I took these pictures with my first press pass, thanks to U of I. After reviewing over 3,000 pictures I think these are decent enough to share. I hope you enjoy them.
